Drawing in a deep breath, I typed in Adelaide’s phone number from heart. I’d been sitting inside of the chapel for hours now, lost on what the fuck to do. Elaina was hell-bent on pretending that I didn’t exist.

I had no idea what the fuck to do anymore. She wouldn’t even talk to me, and when I had tried to talk to her, she had thrown her fucking water in my face before she stormed off.

I fucking hated this shit.

“Joey?” Adelaide asked when she answered, her sweet voice like a soothing balm over the pain I was feeling, though Elaina’s bitterness was still a slight throb beneath it. “What’s going on?”

I drew in a deep breath. “I fucked up, pretty girl,” I told her, my voice hoarse. I pinched the bridge of my nose. “I fucked up with Elaina, and now, I don’t know what to do.”

“Oh, Joey,” she whispered. “I’m sure you didn’t fuck up that badly,” she tried to soothe me.

I snorted. “I went behind her back and did some shit I shouldn’t have,” I told her. She remained quiet. “I need your help. She won’t fucking talk to me, and the last time I tried to talk to her, I got a glass of water thrown in my face.”

“Okay,” she said softly. “Just stay in the chapel, Joey. I’ll get River, and we’ll ride out, okay? I’m sure whatever you did, it can be fixed. You’re a good man, Joey. Don’t lose sight of that, yeah?”

My chest ached at her confession.

Yeah, I was a good guy now, but when she needed me, I had been a monster. I’d let her down.

I sucked in a deep breath of air. It suddenly hurt to breathe. “Thanks, pretty girl.”

“Don’t thank me, Joey. Just hang in there. I’ll text you when I’m on my way. I love you. Stay strong.”

She hung up, but that ‘I love you’ – it gave me some kind of hope that maybe I hadn’t completely fucked up with Elaina. Because if Adelaide could still love me after all of the shit that I had done to her, then maybe this shit could be fixed with Elaina.

I love you, too, pretty girl, I silently replied as I set my phone on the table in front of me.
